Brecon Cathedral Choir Endowment Appeal

A Cathedral without its music would still be a wonderful sacred space, but it would lack one of the ingredients which, for many, make it unique. Brecon, like all but one of Wales's Anglican Cathedrals, differs from most of its English counterparts in having no Choir School and no endowments to support its music. Nevertheless, the expectations of most people are that high quality choral and other music can be found within its walls. An entirely voluntary choir works creditably hard to measure up to these expectations.

Recognising that the continuation of music at the Cathedral was in real jeopardy, the Dean of Brecon, the Very Reverend John Davies, with the support of the Cathedral Chapter, has launched the Brecon Cathedral Choir Endowment Appeal.

It aims to raise the capital sum of £1 million the income from which will be used to support the salaries of the Cathedral's Director of Music and an Assistant Organist, and to provide the Cathedral Choristers with subsidised singing or music lessons during their time with the choir. With the ever increasing cost of providing a high standard music in worship and with music disappearing from the curriculum in many schools, the aims of the Appeal are recognisably worthy: children will receive the benefit of a first class musical education and the Cathedral will be no empty sacred space but such a space filled with glorious music.
