Volunteers

The Cathedral community is a blend of stipendiary clergy and lay staff supported by a host of volunteers without whom the life of the Cathedral would be greatly impoverished.

The Cathedral's life is the responsibility of the Dean and Chapter, and day-to-day oversight is in the hands of the Dean and his clergy and lay colleagues. With our volunteers, we endeavour to make sure that the Cathedral is a shop window of the Church where the best we can offer is available to worshippers and visitors alike.

Music plays an important part in the life of the Cathedral and is cared by the Director of Music and the Assistant Organist. The Cathedral Choir is entirely voluntary, as the Cathedral, like the majority of Welsh Cathedrals, has no choir school and only limited resources with which to support the music. Despite the financial challenges which we face, we maintain a high standard of music for worship, and offer a regular programme of concerts and recitals details of which can also be found on this website. Visiting choirs are always welcome, especially when the Cathedral Choir is on holiday

The Cathedral Singers, a group of adults drawn from Brecon and its surrounding area, also play an important part in the musical life of the place, singing occasional services and presenting concerts.

An independent company manages the shop and heritage centre both of which rely heavily on volunteers to staff them.

Visitors to the Cathedral can expect to be greeted by volunteer welcomers during the spring, summer and early autumn and groups of visitors can arrange, through the Cathedral Office, for a guide to show them around.
